CHILL OUT HUT

Cuisine: Jamaican/Jamaican fusion

Average price pp: $20-$25 (USD)

Chill Out Hut, a name that literally describes the ambience and what you are supposed to do

when you are there: chill out.  It’s situated discreetly on the main High road in Greenwood,

Montego Bay. It is an open restaurant with a car park and you can enjoy the breath taking  beach

whilst dining. I don’t think eating out can get more epic than this.

As I arrived I did feel that the atmosphere could have been a bit more welcoming.  Nevertheless,

I was taken back by the beautiful scenery and was blessed to have sat next to the speaker that had the

most amazing dancehall hits coming from it!

A frozen beverage of the dirty banana cocktail had a taste that I was unfamiliar with. It wasn’t sweet

enough for my liking and I didn’t really enjoy the banana bits that were in it. There was a

strong coffee taste present so I would recommend for those who enjoy this particular flavour.

A manager suggested for me to try the curry conch: a tropical mollusc, as it was their speciality.

The presentation was flawless and the texture was unique. Conch is firm, slightly rubbery and

to the bite. The fried green plantain had a dry feel, and a slight sweetness to it. Furthermore,

it soaked up the curry sauce nicely. This dish was one of the best dishes I had whilst venturing

 in Montego Bay.

Furthermore, my waitress was very attentive.

Next, a chill out platter: mozzarella sticks, chicken wings, coconut fried shrimp, jerk chicken

quesadillas.

I found the mozzarella sticks to be too thick and the middle wasn’t fried like the rest it of it was.

Furthermore, I chose a mango and ginger sauce for my chicken wings which added a candied but

sharp taste to them. These wings were perfect and I loved the crispy outer layer and the

tender chicken meat.

The jerk chicken in the quesdillas could have done with just a bit more flavour I didn’t really

taste the jerk. I would have also preferred for the cheese to have been melted further.

Lastly, with the coconut fried shrimp, I felt that the coconut flavour was too strong. Also,

that the coconut shavings were too much which gave the shrimp a rough texture and made it come

apart quickly once I had bit into it.

Summary

The best thing about Chill Out Hut is that it is on the beach so the view is absolutely stunning. The service was generally good just could have been more welcoming at the beginning. In my opinion, certain foods on the chill out platter could be improved but I strongly recommend the conch for seafood lovers or those looking to try some: it was a spectacular dish!

Recommendations:
